The MWD draws water from the Colorado River and Northern California, treats it, and distributes it across the region. How We Actually Remove Hard Water Stains
We start by confirming glass type. Low-E glass has a slight reflective quality and an almost imperceptible green or blue tint to the edge. We check each pane and note any windows where the standard reflective test indicates a coating. Coated glass gets different treatment than standard glass.
For coated glass with moderate deposits, we apply a phosphoric acid-based mineral remover formulated for low-E glass. We apply with a white scrubbing pad (safe for low-E) using overlapping circular motions, allow appropriate dwell time based on deposit thickness, and rinse with our RODI pure water system.
RODI water — reverse osmosis and deionized — contains virtually zero dissolved minerals. When it dries, it leaves nothing. This is important during mineral removal treatment because rinsing with tap water can re-deposit minerals on glass that has just been stripped. We always rinse mineral removal work with pure water.
After treatment, we assess the results in different light angles. Window glass can look clean in overcast light and show residual haze in direct sun. We don’t call a job done until we’ve checked it both ways.
How to Stop Hard Water Deposits from Coming Back
The deposit comes back because the irrigation system keeps running. But there are things that slow the cycle significantly.
Adjust irrigation zones that overspray windows
Most irrigation systems are set up by landscapers thinking about coverage, not glass protection. A sprinkler head angled five degrees differently can eliminate window overspray without affecting plant coverage. Ask your landscaper to walk the perimeter during a morning irrigation cycle and look at every head near a window.
Consider a whole-house mineral filter
