What is Low-E glass?

Low-E stands for low emissivity. Emissivity is a measure of how readily a surface radiates heat. In glass, a low-emissivity coating reduces the amount of infrared heat that passes through the pane — keeping heat inside in winter and outside in summer. In California’s climate, Low-E is primarily a heat-rejection technology: it reduces the amount of solar heat gain through your windows without significantly reducing visible light transmission.

The coating itself is a microscopically thin metallic oxide layer — typically silver or tin compounds — applied to the inner surface of the glass pane during manufacturing. In double-pane windows, the coating is on the inner surface of the outer pane or the outer surface of the inner pane (facing the airspace between panes). In some configurations, it is on the glass surface you can touch if you reach through an open window.

How do you know if your glass is Low-E? Look at the glass at an angle in natural light. Low-E glass has a faint green or blue tint that standard glass does not. Many Low-E window units also have a small NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) sticker in one corner that was left by the original installer — if it is still there, it will reference the window’s U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient. A Low-E window will have a U-factor below 0.30. Another test: hold a lit match or lighter near the glass and look at the reflection — Low-E glass shows a slightly different-coloured reflection among the multiple reflections visible.

Why razor blades are dangerous on Low-E glass

Before Low-E glass became standard, window cleaners routinely used razor blade scrapers to remove stubborn deposits — paint overspray, silicone residue from construction, dried bird droppings, and hard water deposits. The technique was effective and low-risk on standard annealed glass where the surface could tolerate light abrasion.

Low-E glass cannot tolerate razor blade contact. The metallic oxide coating is microscopically thin — we are talking about layers measured in nanometres. A razor blade moving across this coating under pressure creates microscopic scratches in the coating. These scratches do not look like scratches in the conventional sense — they look like haze, like a rainbow oil-slick pattern, or like a permanently dull patch that catches light differently from the surrounding glass. The damage is only visible in certain light conditions, which means it sometimes goes unnoticed for weeks before the homeowner sees it at the right angle.

The irreversibility is the problem. Standard glass scratches can sometimes be polished out with cerium oxide. Low-E coating damage cannot be repaired. The coating cannot be re-applied by a window cleaner or a glass repair company. The only fix is glass replacement. San Clemente post-construction specifics

New microfibre sleeves

Fresh, clean microfibre with no embedded grit from previous cleans. A contaminated sleeve is abrasive.

pH-neutral glass cleaning solution

Avoid strongly acidic or strongly alkaline solutions. CLR and similar products: test inconspicuous corner first.

RODI rinse water (0 TDS)

No minerals to leave behind. Critical on Low-E — mineral spots on this glass surface are harder to remove than on standard glass.

Razor blade scrapers

Creates irreversible micro-scratches in the Low-E coating. Never. Not even ‘carefully’.

Steel wool (any grade)

Same mechanism as razor blades. Iron particles can also embed in the glass surface and rust.

Abrasive scrub pads (Scotch-Brite type)

Too aggressive for Low-E coating. Use dedicated non-scratch glass cleaning pads only.

Newspaper

Despite cleaning mythology, newsprint has mild abrasive properties. Not worth the risk on Low-E.

How to identify if your San Clemente home has Low-E glass

If your home was built after 2000 and you have double-pane windows, you almost certainly have Low-E glass. California’s Title 24 energy code has required low-emissivity glass in new residential construction since 1999 in most climate zones, and San Clemente falls in a zone where the requirement has been standard since the early 2000s.
